Jarrow MK-7 is a dietary supplement with a high dose of all-trans vitamin K2, to support your health based on the newest nutrition physiological knowledge. Every softgel Jarrow MK-7 contains 90 µg or 180 µg vitamin K2, also called menaquinone-7. Vitamin K belongs to the group of fat-soluble vitamins and should therefore best be taken together with a meal containing fat, like vegetable oil or butter.
The MK-7 oil is obtained by fermentation using the bacterium Bacillus subtilis natto, which is also responsible for the production of the traditional Japanese fermented soybean food Natto. Natto has been an important part of the traditional Japanese cuisine for centuries, but the taste is often hard to enjoy in the Western part of the world. However, studies have shown, that women eating a lot of Natto have a significantly lower risk of hip fractures.
The highly concentrated MK-7 oil extracted from the fermentation is 99% pure, contains no bacterial residues and the vitamin has the active all trans form. The oil is dissolved in olive oil and filled into the softgel capsules, which altogether increases the bioavailability of the vitamin.
Vitamin K2 is a particularly active form of vitamin K, which is absorbed about ten times better by the body than vitamin K1. Furthermore, it has a longer half-life and a higher activity in the body. Vitamin K1 is the form, that is found in green vegetables such as spinach or cabbage, while vitamin K2 is only produced by bacteria and can therefore be found particularly in animal or fermented products (e.g. Sauerkraut). Unfortunately, the intake from these foods is usually not high enough for the daily need. In order to provide 90 µg or 180 µg of vitamin K2 contained in the Jarrow softgels, it would be necessary to consume e.g. 10 liters or 20 liters of milk and 16 or 32 egg yolks.
For many people, vitamin K is known for its contribution to normal blood clotting. Thus, the "K" stands for the Latin word "coagulation". However, vitamin K is also of importance for certain bone proteins required for bone formation. It is for example involved in the carboxylation of osteocalcin, which binds calcium in the bone. A high level of the uncarboxylated form of osteocalcin is therefore associated with a lower bone density. The exact effects of vitamin K on bone structure are:
✔️ promoting bone health through better bone mineralization,
✔️ beneficial effects on collagen formation and collagen organization,
✔️ the incorporation of the absorbed calcium into the bone tissue.
However, only a long-term consumption has a positive impact on bone health. In addition, a combination with vitamin D (for example Jarrow Vegan D3 1000 I.U. or Jarrow Vegan D3 5000 I.U. may be beneficial since vitamin D supports the formation of osteocalcin.
